The ultimate lens for portrait fetishists

Actually, I only use the Sony lenses, but this 85mm 1.4 DG DN from the Art series by SIGMA is just tops.

I borrowed the 85mm 1.4 G-Master at the beginning of the year because I was looking for a faster aperture to go with
    the 85mm 1.8 Sony.

As I already knew, the GM is supposed to be very loud, but that can't really be a problem.
I thought so too! :-) I thought it was annoying because the photos were taken in a church.

Who remembers the sound of the old pencil sharpener, where you could turn the crank until there was nothing left of the pencil?)

Yes, exactly...that's what the Sony G-Master sounds like when the autofocus is working. It may be that there are photographers who don't mind this, it has me.

As for the image quality of the G-Master 1.4, it is almost unbeatable. But if you are looking for a lens that delivers 99% of the same image quality and still wants to save a lot of money, you will be very happy with the SIGMA.

I could not detect any C.A.'s (chromatic aberration), so to speak, which means that SIGMA has corrected them cleanly.

A small vignette is present at aperture 1.4 - 1.8, but at aperture 2.0, almost nothing is visible. I was thrilled with the sharpness. With aperture 1.4, the cropping of an object is perfect. Even at 61 megapixels and maximum magnification, you can only see minimal pixel errors, which are easy to correct.

So if you want a soft and beautiful bokeh, good cropping, sharp photos without C.A.'s, you have made the right choice.

If you want it to be even cheaper and smaller, you can go for the 85mm 1.8 Sony, which is only super sharp in the centre of the image, but is also very suitable for travelling.

In terms of weight, the Sigma ranks between the Sony G-Master 1.4 and the Sony 1.8. I find it optimal myself.

Good lens but the prices of Digitec as on the stock exchange.

I bought the lens on 31.10.20 for 1350.- at Digitec. Had I waited another week I would have saved some money....

About the lens itself I can only say that it is a very nice fast lens for my Sony A7III.
    The bokeh is pleasantly
    mild.
The focal length I find super for me.

Super lens - but not quite flawless

    RESULTS (PHOTO)
Really very nice and sharp. Of course with marginal losses at open aperture, which I can easily forgive.
The highly praised bokeh has earned its laurels. Technically with small flaws, but all in all with harmonious
results - which in my opinion is more important for a portrait lens.
What irritates me are the distortions straight from hell (reference photo 3). However, for all those who want to shoot .jpegs, the distortion correction of the Alpha helps quite reliably. The rest can do it themselves in Lightroom (or other). In my case, depending on the shot, it is not even enough to set the lens correction hook. Then I even have to correct manually. That's fine with me. But if I didn't have the option of correcting, the lens would have to go back. I don't know what you're going to connect this thing to and what adapters you're going to use, but it's something to consider.

    AUTOFOCUS (PHOTO)
Doesn't have the superpowers that are widely reported. It does well what it is supposed to do. Depending on the light conditions and the background, it can sometimes get pumped up. But here too: For me, within the completely legitimate range. It is true that it is pleasantly quiet.

    WORKMANSHIP, MATERIAL, HANDLING
Everything absolutely flawless. Superb feel. Thanks to the option of an aperture ring with click-grid and a wide, beautifully stiff focus ring, I now count myself among the self-confessed click-manuals.

    DIMENSIONS
The same performance as the predecessor lens (DG HSM) is in here - and at two-thirds the size and half the weight. So really compact (for an 85/1.4 you can talk small), light and not very "intimidating". Absolute plus point.

    CONCLUSION
If you can spare a good grand and tame the distortions: Buy and have fun.

Info: A7RII, picture 2 is a crop of picture 1.
