Xiaomi Mi 9T: here’s the successor of the best-selling POCO F1

A few months ago, rumours began to spread about the POCO F2 – later on the names Redmi K20 and Mi9 T were mentioned. The Chinese giant likes to play with names. In Switzerland, it’s officially called Mi 9T. And it’s now available for pre-sale.

The sub-brand Pocophone first came on the scene last year and surprised us all with a powerful and affordable smartphone, which quickly became a bestseller. Its only weak point was the DRM protection Widevine L1, which didn’t allow HD streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Xiaomi fixed this in February 2019. Xièxiè (thank you) for that. Unsurprisingly, the demand for the successor was huge. But it remained unclear which series it would be part of in Europe. Poco F2: No. Redmi K20: No. Mi 9T: Yes!

Front cameras are slipping more and more under the display, making the screen larger and allowing manufacturers to avoid the unpopular notch. The POCO F1 comes with a front cam that's barely visible until you tap on the camera app – that's when it pops up. It’s equipped with 20 MP and a focal length of f/2.2 (0.8µm). The new Selfie Panorama mode lets you take pictures of an entire group by turning the phone from side to side. The mechanical pop-up camera is said to slide in and out 300,000 times without any problem. It's protected from falling or accidental impact by a sensor that retracts the camera.

Triple camera

Although the front camera is pretty awesome already, the Mi 9T features a rear triple camera, too. What it performs? Wide-angle, telephoto and ultra-wide-angle. The ultra-wide angle lets you capture 124.8° – AI correction prevents distortion. Xiaomi also attached great importance to improved night-time photos: the Mi 9T features a ½ inch sensor that's said to capture 1.6μm large pixels while AI algorithms help you capture brighter, crisper photos in the dark.
