Trailer Tuesday: Carnival Row, Nicolas Cage and the Addams Family

Luca Fontana

A fantastical Victorian London with mythical creatures. A drug empire on the brink of chaos. The most (in)famous scary family in the world. An obscene would-be pimp/karate expert. This week on Trailer Tuesday.

Two directorial masters go head to head. At least, that was last week's Trailer Tuesday. I'm talking about Martin Scorsese and Sam Mendes.

Trailer Tuesday: The Irishman, Mindhunter and a star-studded war drama

    by Luca Fontana

After all, last Friday evening Scorsese's Mafia thriller «The Irishman» and Mendes' war drama «1917» were on equal footing in our audience poll. Only the weekend was able to reveal the true victor.

There we have it: the old dog Scorsese manages to pull through.

What's on this week's Trailer Tuesday? First off we've got Nicolas Cage and Laurence Fishburne in a drug thriller. Next there's the nth remake of the «Addams Family». But this time it's actually funny. Then we have a fantasy series with Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne as the lead actors. Followed quickly by Eddie Murphy as a comedian/singer/actor/rapper from the 70s. Finally: a first glimpse at the Apple TV Plus-made «The Morning Show».

Carnival Row

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne in Victorian London. But not just any Victorian London. It's actually a mystical magical city, filled to the brim with creatures from the wildest mythoses. Creatures feared and suppressed by humans, being seen as immigrants: they don't have personal freedoms, can't fly – and can't love. Which is exactly what makes the affair between Bloom, a human detective, and Delevigne, a fairy, so explosive. And then there's a vicious monster out to doom the entire city.

Does it sound interesting? Yes, definitely. The trailer is blowing my mind, at least visually. And following the extremely successful «The Boys», I'm extremely interested in what Amazon Prime Video will offer us up next. Oh yes, I'm watching this.

Start date: 2/9/2019, Prime Video

Running with the Devil

The head of a large big cartel (Barry Pepper – remember the sniper from «Saving Private Ryan»?) thinks there's a rat in his organisation after a large cocaine shipment is confiscated. His closest confidants, The Cook (Nicolas Cage) and The Man (Laurence Fishburne), are on the case: from workers who pick the leaves in South America through drug packers all the way to dealers. Nicolas Cage, The Cook, slowly realises that the entire network could be in danger.

I'm a simple man. I see «Nicolas Cage», I watch. Especially when he's acting like Walter White 2.0. That's high-priority.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 20/9/2019

The Addams Family

Duh-duh-duh-duh. Snap. Snap. Duh-duh-duh-duh. Snap. Snap.

This isn't the first Addams Family movie. And it sure won't be the last. I never really was a fan of the family. Still, the trailer above really made me laugh. Especially the «Drop it like it's hot» at the end. Haha. Why not. On the watch list it goes.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 11/10/2019

Dolemite Is My Name

Do you know Rudy Ray Moore? Barely? Don't worry, you'll get introduced in this trailer. Back in the 60s and 70s, Moore was an American comedian, musician, singer, rapper, actor and movie producer. He started in music, then he transitioned to the comedy genre until arriving at obscenely funny music. As his Dolemite character, he recorded albums such as «Eat Out More Often», «This Pussy Belongs To Me» and «The Dirty Dozen». Then he switched to being an actor, performing as a karate artist in movies such as «The Human Tornado» and «The Return of Dolemite».

Well. Now the «Godfather of Rap» is getting a Netflix movie. With Eddie Murphy in the leading role. Looks... good – I'm finding it hard to express this thought, as I can't stand the so-called «comedian». Whatever. Put it on the list.

Start date: autumn of 2019, Netflix

The Morning Show

No one loves «Morning Shows» more than the good old US of A. Morning Shows being news shows starting around 5 or 6 a.m. Instead of hard-hitting facts like in the «Tagesschau», they rely more on good vibes and light entertainment. The most important thing: having a good face for the show. This being a moderator on which the whole show is built on.

«The Morning Show» is slated to be a drama, the first series wholly produced by the upcoming streaming service Apple TV+. Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell are in the main roles. Viewers will find out what really goes on behind the scenes of that feel-good veil Morning Shows put up. No matter which show you watch.

Start date: autumn of 2019, Apple TV+

So much to watch...

I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
