That there are Norwegian knitted jumpers with a diamond pattern is at least vaguely known to most of us. But the fact that the pattern has a name and, in addition to clothing, also adorns lunch boxes, thermos flasks, smartphone covers and many other articles that originate from Norway or are intended to give that impression, perhaps not so much. And the fact that this pattern is worth a fortune and is fiercely contested under copyright law will be news to many.
The knitted pattern is a very popular design.
The knitting pattern is called "Marius" and comes from designer Unn Søiland, who revolutionised Norwegian fashion in the 1950s with colourful yarn and new patterns and made it internationally famous: soon models were walking the catwalk in Paris in hand-knitted looks from Søiland's manufactory.
In 1953, she recorded her most successful design on paper for the first time. In its original form, it contains the colours of the Norwegian flag (red, blue and white) and is knitted - knitting connoisseurs nod knowingly - differently from normal patterns: plain right instead of two left, two right. It was first sold as a hand-knitted pattern in 1954, and a good 70 years later it has become a Norwegian icon: "Marius" is the best-selling and most knitted pattern in the world. Accordingly, the battle for licensing is heated. Anyone who wants to knit, print or weave the typical Norwegian lozenges must be licensed by the official and only publisher of knitting pattern rights and have them checked before production; anything else is a copyright infringement. The current manufacturer of the genuine "Norwegian jumper", Rauma Ullvarefabrikk, is thus fighting against the dilution of its high-quality, internationally identity-forming brand.
