Ideal for every skill level: the Garmin Forerunner 45 and 45S pre-sale
Ready for whatever summer throws at you
The new Forerunner 45 and 45S models (the S here meaning «smaller wrists») are coming out just in time for hot days. Aside from its actual target group – beginners and those more advanced –, it’s sure to appeal to those who might’ve had a 2019 New Year’s resolution to work out more, but haven’t been able to muster up the will to put those thoughts into action. The new Forerunner 45 and 45S models are comprehensive and promising sports watches, more than justifying their great price. A nice part of the design I like a lot is the thin ring of colour next to the main button at the top-right.
They’re rolling out towards the end of May.

Videos speak louder than words:
Discover the new Forerunner sports watch and make it your own
The Forerunner 45 and 45S models are being sold as beginner’s models, but they still offer many detailed features. A VO2max value for example, which gauges your maximal oxygen intake, a useful indicator for fitness. The Body Battery function is a type of energy monitor, which constantly tracks your body’s energy level, giving you better data on how to plan out your active and rest times. The automatic accident notifications increase safety. If you fall during an activity, your location will be sent to pre-determined emergency contacts. You can also do this manually via the emergency function (hold down the top-left button long). You can personalise your watch display however you want.
Out of pure interest, let’s take a quick look at its predecessor, the Forerunner 35. The many updates (colour display, range of functions, design, etc.) are more of an upgrade. The developers at Garmin seem to have found a great mix.
Switch your wristband at will
You’ll probably be wearing your new smartwatch almost every day. Why not try a new colour every so often? The 45 model uses a 20mm wristband size while the 45S is slightly smaller at 18mm.
How about an upgrade? The all-new «HRM Dual» chest belt
The Forerunner 45 and 45S models measure your heart rate at the wrist. However, many athletes prefer chest belts. Thanks to their close proximity to the heart, they offer better readings. This data is sent to your sports watch in real time, allowing you to adjust your workout to your optimal heart rate.
Garmin’s new HRM Dual chest belt is their own version of this product. Compared to its predecessor, this belt doesn’t just allow for an ANT+ connection, but also offers Bluetooth (a particularly useful feature for Zwift users). The belt is adjustable, with a battery runtime of up to 3.5 years.
Even if the Forerunner 45 and 45S battery lasts for a long time, it can never hurt to have an extra charging cable for your office or the road. Anyone who’s smartwatch died in the middle of a workout knows what I’m talking about.
Garmin Connect, Garmin Coach and Connect IQ
Garmin Connect is the most important app for Garmin users (available for Android and iOS). It’s a sort of online fitness community. It’s completely up to you whether you want to share your data with others or not.
Garmin Connect gives you access to Garmin Coach. Choose between three world-famous professional coaches to accompany your training and help you reach your goals (5/10km run or half-marathon) with free dynamic workout plans.
Finally, the Garmin Connect app lets you access Connect IQ. This great platform allows you to deck out your Garmin smartwatch with free watch faces, data fields, apps and widgets. For example, choose between various backgrounds or display weather information, sunrise, etc. on your watch.
