Freeride essentials: fun and safety in deep powder snow

Freeriding will make you feel like a total badass. Go beyond the beaten tracks and explore the beauty of untouched deep powder snow. Freeriding on your skis, snowboard or splitboard is a great way to experience the serenity of nature and a unique adventure. But before your set out to explore the backcountry, make sure you have the right equipment. Here’s a quick guide on freeride equipment you can’t do without.

Freeride essentials

Snowshoe hiking is very popular, as these lightweight shoes allow you to float over deep powder snow and explore winter landscapes away from the busy resort areas. Snowshoes are a great way for snowboarders to climb up an untouched mountain and freeride down. For short trails, snowshoes made of plastic are a good choice. Aluminium snowshoes are light, offer great stability and more flotation, making them suitable for long-distance hikes. If you’re wearing shoes with a firm back, go for ratchet bindings; for soft footwear, you’re better off with strap bindings.

Freeriding on mountain terrain far off the designated slopes is harder on your board or skis, so freeride boards are longer and more stable than all-mountain boards. They also have a wider nose, offering you more flotation in deep powder snow – similar to freestyle boards. Freeride skis are also longer and wider than all-mountain skis and have a directional shape that supports flotation. There are extremely wide, pure powder or slim freeride skis. Freeride skis are designed for backcountry skiing in new and deep powder snow, but perform better than pure powder skis on the slopes and when ascending with climbing skins.

Splitboards are made for uphill touring and downhill riding. When ascending slopes or on long tours, splitboards can be separated into two ski-like parts and used with climbing skins to make sure you don’t slip on the slopes. Once you’ve reached the top, all you need to do is put the parts together to a snowboard and ride down the mountain.

Safety first

If you want your backcountry adventure to be fun, you need to be prepared. Having avalanche safety gear – an avalanche transceiver, avalanche shovel, avalanche probes, a ski helmet, headlamp and first aid kit – is essential. What’s more, the best equipment won’t help if you don’t know what to do. Training is important, so we recommend you do avalanche search exercises with your friends regularly.
