Eight types of baby beds for a good night's sleep
Bonding with your baby is especially important right after birth. Being close to their parents makes babies establish a sense of emotional security and protection. That’s why deciding where your baby is going to sleep is key for many parents. Let me show you what the options are.
Bedside cots are designed to be placed next to the parents' bed, allowing your baby to sleep right beside you, but in a separate bed. This is especially useful if you’re still breastfeeding or if your baby is restless, as you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to be with your baby.
Before choosing a bedside cot, make sure it’s possible to adjust it to the height of your own bed. Some bedside cots can be converted into bassinets, making it easy to use the same cot at day and at night.

Classic bassinets are woven and come on four wheels, but nowadays, there are many other versions. The advantage of bassinets is that they offer you flexibility, as they’re easy to wheel from one room to another. Some bassinets can be transformed into bedside cots.

Cradles are similar to bassinets, but rock back and forth, which has a comforting effect on babies and helps them fall asleep. To make sure it doesn’t get too much, some cradles can be locked into a stationary position.

Most parents opt for a cot sooner or later. Whether the cot is in the nursery or the parents’ room, this is a large step for any baby. A regular size cot has the dimensions 70x140 cm or 60x120 cm. My recommendation is to go for a cot that comes with height-adjustable slatted frames. A baby can sleep higher up, making it easy for you to take it out of bed, while a toddler, being able to stand up in bed, can sleep lower down. Some cots come with removable bars, allowing toddlers to get in and out of bed on their own. Other cots even come with a kit to transform them into a child’s bed. If you’d like a solution that doesn’t have to be changed for several years, a complete nursery is your best choice.

It’s perfect if you’re going on a holiday, visiting friends or if your little one is staying overnight at someone else’s. A travel cot is easy to set up and will make sure your child feels at home anywhere you go. There are models with mobile, mosquito net, travel cot inlay, changing mat or toy bag. Almost all travel beds are foldable and many of them have wheels. Some travel beds have an extra exit that can be used by toddlers or older children, turning your travel cot into a playpen.

A playpen is great during the day, as it allows you to take a shower, cook lunch, do some cleaning or leave the room for other reasons. With mesh sides or wooden bars, playpens are a safe place for the little ones to play in or take a nap: Babies can't get injured on an edge or a corner of the table, nor get to any drawers or close to sockets. Some playpens are height-adjustable (just like cots), have wheels, movable doors or removable bars. These options allow you to adjust to the needs of yourself and your little one.

With a size of 70x140 cm or even 90x200 cm, children’s beds, as their name indicates, are suitable for children up to the age of teenagers. The smaller version will probably have to be replaced sooner or later, as it will get too small or your child won’t like it any more.

Whichever bed is the right one for you and your little one, accessories such as nursing pillows, swaddle blankets, sleeping bags, bed guards or cot canopies will make your baby feel even safer and more comfortable. Who’d prefer to sleep on their own if they can sleep cuddled up in their very own soft gadgets and cuddly blankets?
